Jon Stewart asks donors to help restore National Mall in Washington, D.C.

October 5, 2010 2 comments

Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and Stephen Colbert, host of “The Colbert Report” are holding dueling rallies on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on October 30. The rallies will mock the Beck and Sharpton rallies that took place this year on the mall.

Stewart’s rally is called “Rally to Restore Sanity” and Colbert’s rally is called “Keep Fear Alive.”

The National Mall has more visitors than Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite national parks combined.

The amount of foot traffic to the Mall has also built up a $400 million in maintenance backlog, which includes routine maintenance as well as the repair of crumbling sidewalks, stagnant water in the reflecting pool and more.

The Mall is in a state of disrepair, reflecting years of neglect and inadequate funding. It is time to act to save this historic memorial of our nation’s history. (Trust for the National Mall)

“Rally to Restore Sanity” will ask attendees to help restore the National Mall

Stewart chose the the Trust for the National Mall as his charity of choice.

“We feel it’s important to preserve this historic site for future rallies and for future Americans to rally on!” Stewart wrote. “But just in case you accidentally, like, put a beverage down on the Mall’s coffee table without using a coaster, we figure that giving a little something back to the National Mall might, at least, soften the blow.”

Colbert is asking his attendees to donate to Donors Choose, which raised monies for school supplies.
