$50k Bond set for man who steals ambulance with paramedics treating a patient

Jimmy McCoy (27) of Chicago was charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle on Saturday around 11:30 a.m., when he stole Ambulance 23 with emergency personnel treating a patient inside.  His bond was set at $50,000.

The ambulance was cut off a few blocks away by Fire Truck 26 who responded to a call that paramedics radioed they were inside of an ambulance that had been stolen.

According to AP, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said McCoy “allegedly jumped into the stopped ambulance and drove off with the emergency lights on.”

Emergency workers told police “they were attending to a diabetic patient in the rear of the ambulance when they felt the ambulance begin to move,” Cheronis said in court. “He was driving his friend to the hospital.”

McCoy allegedly told officers he “thought he could get to the hospital quicker’’ than the ambulance workers, police said. (suntimes)

Prosecutors said McCoy apparently thought he was driving his diabetic friend to the hospital.

The patient who was being evaluated by paramedics was eventually transferred to another ambulance and taken to a hospital in a non-life-threatening condition, Langford said.
