Judge orders decorated Air Force nurse to be reinstated; nurse discharge because she is gay

United States District Judge Ronald Leighton ruled Friday to have decorated United States Air Force nurse  Maj. Margaret Witt to be reinstated after she was discharged for being gay.

Lady Gaga is out campaigning to have the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy revoked and some Senate Republicans have been campaigning for the opposite.

Judge Leighton is the second federal judge this month to rule the policy being unconstitutional.

In 2004 Maj. Witt was suspended and eventually discharged after the military found out she had been in a long-term relationship with a woman.

“Today you have won a victory in that struggle, the depth and duration of which will be determined by other judicial officers and hopefully soon the political branches of government,” the judge told her, choking up as he recalled Witt’s dramatic testimony about her struggles.
