Virginia to execute first woman in nearly a century

Teresa Lewis, 41 is scheduled to die by lethal injection Thursday at 9:00 p.m. at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt.

Lewis has exhausted her appeals in the October 2002 hired killings of her husband and stepson.  The United States Supreme Court and Governor Bob McDonnell have declined to intervene in the execution process.

According to AP

Earlier this week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused Western media of having a double standard in reporting on the Lewis execution.

He compared coverage of the Lewis case to the “heavy propaganda” campaign against the case of an Iranian woman who had been sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery.

“Meanwhile, nobody objects to the case of an American woman who is going to be executed,” he was quoted as saying during a speech Monday to Islamic clerics and other figures in New York.

Lewis will be the first woman to be executed in the State of Virginia since 1912.

The death penalty was reinstated by the United States in 1976.

Hmmm not sure how I feel about this…I really don’t like the death penalty but really don’t like people who hurt kids. I do, however, agree with the president of Iran. We need to stop trying to control the world. Everyone has rules to follow and she choose to take a chance…maybe less people would cheat in the US if there was a possibility of being stoned to death. (it is a horrible way to die though)

i understand that each state has its own laws regarding the death penalty, HOWEVER, it steams me that this woman has been sentenced to death for hiring someone to kill while people who have actually committed murders aren’t even on death row. yet another a glitch in an already flawed justice system. i don’t know the specifics of her case, nor do i take issue with her being found guilty. it’s the sentencing the isn’t sitting well.
